Dreamy Day in Chianti

On a beautiful Friday in September with clear blue skies and a warm Tuscan breeze, we set out to visit the Chianti region, between Siena and Florence, which is known for producing some of the best wines known to man. In the Chianti region, many wines that are produced with specific guidelines are made. There is the Chianti Classico, which must be made with at least 80% San Giovese grapes, a variety of grape native to the region, hence the name "Classico." There is also the Supertuscan, which is produced with almost exclusively grapes that are not native to the region, like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The specificity of the way that these wines are made has allowed Chianti wine producers to preserve the age-old methods, traditions, and flavors associated with the region. It was fascinating to recognize the vintner's commitment to their craft. The producer we visited also had a large plot of olive trees which they use to make some very exclusive, expensive olive oil which we tasted as well.
